It’s official: Winter is here!
Though many people tend to hibernate through the frigid winter months, we love the fun snowy activities taking place in Winnipeg and surrounding areas.
If you’re itching to get outside and enjoy the beauty of the season, look no further! We’ve compiled a list of seven must-do activities in Winnipeg over the winter months. Bonus: Spending time outdoors is also beneficial for those who experience seasonal affective disorder.
Bundle up and enjoy!
Whether you like hitting the slopes or cross-country skiing is more your jam, Manitoba has a ton of groomed trails to ski this winter. Bonus: It’s a solid workout, too! One hour of skiing can burn 300 to 600 calories.
If you’re not a skier or snowboarder but still want to engage in a little snowy fun, dust off that sled that’s collecting dust in your garage or rent a snow tube from a local ski hill. Pack a thermos with a hot bevvie and spend the afternoon cruising down a local hill.
It’s almost criminal to miss out on the Nestaweya River Trail at The Forks! Rent skates or bring your own to venture down the river, under the canopy or near the ‘Winnipeg’ sign by the CN Stage. Skating not your thing? There are also fat bikes and snowshoes available to rent! Make sure to check out the warming huts dotting the river trail.
FortWhyte Alive is one of our favourite local spots year-round, but there’s something extra special about the reclaimed urban greenspace in the winter months. Walk the snowy trails, try your hand at ice-fishing, visit the Sod House and sit around a bonfire, complete with bannock.
February marks the winter favourite Festival du Voyageur, which celebrates the province’s fur trading, Métis and Francophone history. Marvel at the snow sculptures carved by artists from around the world, listen to foot-tapping live music and indulge in a variety of yummy treats.
Did you know Manitoba is home to the world’s largest snow maze? Take on the challenge of finding your way out, and check out A Maze in Corn’s other winter attractions while you’re there.
Build a snowperson or snow fort, have a snowball fight with your family and make snow angels! Hot chocolate and marshmallows optional.
